What Is an Image Annotation Tool?

An image annotation tool lets you add visual markups (such as arrows, text labels, numbered steps, highlights, and blur regions) directly onto screenshots and images. These annotations make images self-explanatory for documentation, training materials, bug reports, and knowledge bases. According to TechSmith's 2023 research, visual instructions with annotations are 3x more effective than text-only instructions, and 67% of employees complete tasks better when instructions include annotated screenshots. Unlike desktop software like Snagit or Skitch, browser-based annotation tools require no installation and work on any operating system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about SOPX.

What image formats are supported?
PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, and SVG. These cover virtually all screenshots and images used in documentation.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All image processing happens in your browser. Your image never leaves your device, so it's safe for screenshots with sensitive content.
What is the maximum file size?
50 MB. Images larger than 4096 pixels in any dimension are automatically downscaled to stay within browser limits while preserving quality.
Can I undo my changes?
Yes. The tool supports full undo/redo with up to 50 history steps. Use Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) to undo and Ctrl+Shift+Z (Cmd+Shift+Z on Mac) to redo. You can also delete individual annotations or clear all at once.
What export formats are available?
You can export annotated images as PNG (best quality for screenshots) or JPG (smaller file size). You can also copy the image directly to your clipboard for pasting into documents, Slack, email, or issue trackers.
Can I blur or redact sensitive information?
Yes. The blur tool has two modes: blur (obscures content while keeping visual context) and redact (solid black fill for complete removal). This is useful for hiding passwords, personal data, or API keys before sharing screenshots.
How does this compare to paid annotation tools?
Unlike desktop tools like Snagit or Skitch, this tool runs entirely in your browser with no installation, no account, and no cost. It works on any operating system including Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS.
Is this tool really free?
Yes, 100% free with no usage limits, no watermarks, and no account required. SOPX built it as a free resource for teams that annotate screenshots for documentation and training.
