What Is an Image Annotation Tool?

An image annotation tool lets you add visual markup (such as arrows, text labels, numbered step markers, highlights, and blur or redact regions) directly onto screenshots and images, so they explain a process at a glance. SOPX offers this free, browser-based image annotation tool: it runs entirely in your browser with no upload and no account, so your screenshots never leave your device, which keeps it privacy-first for sensitive or internal images. Its numbered step markers (1, 2, 3 callouts), arrows, blur, and redact tools are built for SOPs, work instructions, training materials, bug reports, and knowledge base articles. Unlike desktop software such as Snagit or Skitch, it needs no installation and works on any operating system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about SOPX.

What image formats are supported?
The free SOPX image annotation tool supports PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, and SVG. These cover virtually every screenshot captured on Windows, macOS, Linux, or ChromeOS, plus images used in documentation and training. You can export your annotated result as PNG or JPG.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The SOPX image annotation tool is browser-based and privacy-first: all image processing happens locally in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded to any server and never leaves your device, so it is safe for screenshots that contain sensitive or confidential content such as internal dashboards, customer data, or credentials.
Does it work on mobile, and what is the maximum file size?
It runs in any modern browser on desktop, and works on mobile and tablet browsers too, since it needs no installation. The maximum file size is 50 MB. Images larger than 4096 pixels in any dimension are automatically downscaled to stay within browser rendering limits while preserving quality. Most screenshots fall well within these limits.
Can I add numbered steps to a screenshot?
Yes. The numbered step marker tool drops 1, 2, 3 callouts onto a screenshot, which is ideal for SOPs and work instructions where each click or action needs a clear order. You also get arrows, text labels, highlights, blur, and redact. The tool has full undo/redo with up to 50 history steps (Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z to undo), plus keyboard shortcuts for every tool.
What export formats are available?
You can export annotated images as PNG (lossless, best quality for screenshots and documentation) or JPG (smaller file size for web use). Annotations render at full image resolution. You can also copy the annotated image straight to your clipboard for instant pasting into documents, Slack, email, or issue trackers like Jira and GitHub.
Can I blur or redact sensitive information?
Yes. The blur tool has two modes: blur (a gaussian effect that obscures content while keeping visual context) and redact (a solid black fill for complete removal). Because everything is processed locally in your browser with no upload, it is safe for hiding passwords, email addresses, personal data, or API keys before sharing screenshots in bug reports or documentation.
How does it compare to Snagit, Skitch, or other annotation tools?
Unlike desktop apps such as Snagit (paid) or Skitch (macOS only), the SOPX tool runs entirely in your browser with no installation, no account, and no cost, on any operating system including Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS. Snagit and similar tools also capture your screen; this tool focuses on annotating existing screenshots with professional markup including numbered step markers, arrows, blur, and redact.
Is this tool really free?
Yes. The image annotation tool is 100% free with no usage limits, no watermarks, and no account required. It is built by SOPX, an AI platform that turns a screen or phone recording or a PDF into a structured, step-by-step SOP in under 10 minutes, with the same annotation tools on every step and one-click translation into 50+ languages. The annotator is offered free for teams that document and train; if you need full multi-step SOPs, SOPX has a free trial (5 AI SOPs and 3 translations, no credit card).
