What is work instruction software?

Work instruction software creates, publishes, and revises the step-by-step instructions that tell an operator how to perform one specific task at one specific station. Unlike general document management, the output is built to be followed during the work: visual steps, one action each, revision control, and delivery to the point of use by screen, tablet, or QR code.

What separates the products is what they can capture. Screen-capture tools build instructions by recording browser clicks, which cannot help with a changeover or a machine setup. Anything aimed at physical work has to start from video of a person doing the job.

What is the difference between work instruction software and SOP software?
Work instruction software produces the task-level document an operator follows at a single station, while SOP software usually covers the process-level document that governs how a whole procedure is run. In practice most tools do both and the label follows the buyer: manufacturing and logistics teams say work instructions, office and service teams say SOPs. The functional question worth asking is not which word the vendor uses but whether the tool can capture work that happens away from a screen.
Which work instruction platforms document processes visually rather than text-only?
Any tool that starts from video rather than from a blank text editor will produce a visual instruction by default. SOPX generates a trimmed video clip for every step from a single phone recording, and lets you annotate the key frame with arrows, callouts, and text so an operator can see exactly which part is meant. Screen-capture tools such as Scribe and Tango also produce visual output, but only for processes that happen inside a browser.
Can work instruction software handle a multilingual production line?

This matters more than it sounds: a line running English documentation for a floor that does not read English is effectively undocumented.
How do you keep work instructions current when the process changes?
Edit the step and publish a new version. In SOPX every link and QR code already on the floor then resolves to the current revision, so there is nothing to reprint or redistribute, and prior versions remain in procedure history with version restore if you need to go back. This is the single biggest difference from a printed or PDF-based system, where a revision means physically replacing the document at every station.
Does SOPX integrate with our MES, ERP, or QMS?
Not out of the box. There are no prebuilt MES, ERP, or QMS connectors and no public API on the standard plans. API access and custom integrations are scoped with you on request and billed separately from the plan, so an integration is a project rather than a setting you switch on. If a deep two-way link to an existing system is the deciding requirement, weigh an enterprise connected-worker platform alongside SOPX before you trial either.
Can we prove that an operator actually followed the instruction?
Yes, through Run mode. You attach forms and checklists to specific steps, and the operator confirms each one as they work, with an optional note and signature at the end of the run. Analytics then show who viewed and ran each procedure. What SOPX does not do is detect on its own whether the physical work matched the document, so this is evidence of execution, not automated conformance monitoring.
What does work instruction software cost?
The two pricing models matter more than the number. Self-serve tools like SOPX publish a per-seat rate, have no seat minimum, and start on a free trial, so you can test on your own footage before committing. Enterprise platforms are demo-gated and quote-based, usually with a seat minimum and a separate implementation fee, which is why comparable spend runs to several thousand a year before anyone publishes an instruction.
